LEARNING PLAN Inquiry Based Instruction

Title of the lesson: Learning About Communities: Live, work, play, and solve problems. Teacher Focus: Grade/Age level: 2nd Date: 11.27.2012

Call on a more variety of students. Same students get the opportunity to talk.
Scenario:

This is an introductory lesson to learning about communities. It is a whole group instruction with 18 students and I have taught this group before.
Iowa Core Curriculum Standards and/or Benchmarks:

Essential Concepts and/or Skills: Understand the relationship of the individual to the components of society and culture. Understand that a community is a group to which a person may belong.
Learning Targets:

To introduce what makes a place a community and what people do in a community.


Success Criteria :

I can identify at least three places in my community where people play, work, and live.
Procedure: Introduction
What is a community? With the person sitting next talk about your community. You have 1 minute to start and then we will switch.

b) Steps:
Have students open their books to page three of their Social Studies Alive books. While looking at the picture ask: What do you see? In this community where to people work? Where do people play? Where might you see people working together to solve a problem? Read the story pg 4-7 Listen to song: Track 1, The Community Song, Have student listen while the follow the song. Sing it two or three times so everyone can be comfortable singing.

c) Closure
Have students brainstorm about their community. Show student an example of my brainstorming.

d) Assessment
Complete these two stems: Teacher will know students have met the criteria by using a tally sheet to determine whether students were able to give three examples of each.

Students will be able to identify at least three places in their community where people play, work, and live.

Evidence of addressing diversity:


Students will be given freedom and encouraged to talk about their own communities. If it is difficult for them they will be also allowed to talk about a community they know of by grandparents or friends. They will not be forced.

Differentiation

Some students will need extra assistance and they will join my CT or me at the table to work together.
