Hard work paying off for local entrepreneurs

EAST KILDONAN

A potential tragedy inspired a trio of Kildonan-East graduates. Samuel Okwudili, Laz Yohannes, and Jacob Onek recently started Primavera Clothing as they attempt to spread both fashion and a positive message. Theres so much more to it. Primavera is a new beginning, a new start, said Yohannes, who is preparing for a career in the heating and air conditioning industry. Were trying to bring something to the table that other clothing companies dont have. Were trying to send a positive message to people out there. During Okwudili and Oneks Grade 12 year of 200910, Onek was stabbed multiple times while trying to break up a dispute at a house party. Around the same time, a classmate was in a serious crash on Lagimodiere Boulevard. Jacob, after the stuff happened, he messaged me and said I might not even be around today You can be fine . one day and not the next, recalled Okwudili. Onek recovered and is now attending school in Guelph, Ont. The serious incidents helped the friends realize that life cant be taken for granted, and are trying to bring that theme to the forefront through their T-shirts and posters. Eventually, the company hopes to also produce hats and purses, among other items. Our time to pursue our goals and dreams is so limited and so many things can distract us, so why not promote hard work? said Okwudili. Hard work is what we need to achieve our goals. Okwudili, a University of Winnipeg chemistry student, explained he and his friends always had an entrepreneurial spirit, but took a while to find their calling in clothing. The company has a photographer and a three-person video crew to go along with more traditional roles like designers, clothing liaisons and a webmaster. He explained most of the current designs came from Kildonan-East classmate Ima Ekanem, while going forward, designing will be a collaborative effort. The line will hold a launch party at Ednoc Urban Wear, located at 101-77 Edmonton St., on April 27. For more information, visit the companys website at primaveraclothing.com.
