Life Watch's special issue on the demise of Teacher of Teachers Padma Shri Prof. Mahdi Hasan.

He had profound knowledge of anatomy: Dr. A.M. Kar By the time I joined MBBS at KGMC, he had gone to Aligarh Medical College. Therefore, Prof. Mahdi Hasan never taught us direct. When he came back to Lucknow after retirement and started teaching here, I was the Professor in King Georges Medical College, Lucknow. Then we had good interaction with each other. His elder brother, Ghulam Husain Sb was an IAS posted as District Magistrate, Pratapgarh. My father Dr. DM Kar was civil surgeon there. Prof. Hasan had done MS by that time. He used to visit his brother in Pratapgarh. We used to meet him there. I was young but I remember going to Ghulam Husain Sbs house with my father. Once I joined KGMC as faculty, we began meeting each other in various functions. He had profound knowledge on anatomy. Most remarkable characteristic of his personality was that if you have studied properly and then go to meet him, he would still tell a thing or two that you didnt know. If you didnt know something, it would feel as if he was more concerned that you should know that. He would do his all to teach you. For this reason, Prof. Mahdi Hasan was the darling of undergraduate students of KGMU. Each and every student of this institution was highly impressed by his method of teaching which made learning of Anatomy very simple and interesting. He was a perfectionist and genius. Only such people deserve being called a scholar. If he was having food, he would have a book in hand. If he was going to toilet, he would take a book. He always impressed us as he was submerged in academics 24x7. If a real definition of academician is to be written, one should look at him. He was truly a teacher of teachers. KGMC is 100 years old and in these 100 years only two Georgians have got M.S. Hons. Dr. Ramesh Nigam got Honors in Surgery way back in 1940s and Dr. Mahdi Hasan got in Anatomy. In spite of such levels of studies, he was an all-rounder as he represented KGMC and Lucknow University in Football, Hockey, Table Tennis and Cricket and was a College Blue. Dr. A.M. Kar Former Principal, King Georges Medical College Former Dean Faculty of Medicine Former Professor & Head, Department of Neurology, King Georges Medical University, Lucknow
