To cover or adorn with or as if with folds of cloth.

Draping requires the use of a dress form and cheap fabric that closely resembles the fabric of the finished garment Fashion designing using the draping tech.is the smoothing, contouring&manipulation of a fabric on a dress form to create a garment or pattern

Designers have to take a lot of factors into consideration when it comes to draping fabric. The type and weight of a fabric can considerably change the way it drapes on a garment, as can the shape of the garment itself. Chiffons, satins and silks are quite frequently used in draped clothing, but many other fabrics can be used as well. More rigid fabrics are often unsuitable for this effect.

Available in three basic types Coarse weave of medium wt. used by beginners because the grain is easily recognized. A lightweight, finely woven f/c used for soft draping. A heavyweight ,firmly woven f/c used for draping tailored garments. This is also known as toile muslin.

Measuring Tape:
*It has a smooth surface that is clearly marked with increments of inches and centimeters on both sides. * It is usually about inch to inch wide and 60 inches long, and has 1/8 divisions . * At one end of the tape is attached a brass strip about 3 inches long and at the other end, a small brass covering.

It is an L-shaped metal ruler; the long arm measures 24 inches, the short arm 14 inches. This has a perfect right angle corner and is used to draw lines at right angles at the time of drafting. It is helpful during the process of straightening fabric to check whether the corners of the fabric have got the right-angled structure.

It is used to transfer the pattern markingsincluding seams, darts and pocket placements to the wrong side of the fabric with the aid of tracing paper. The small serrated edge tracing wheel is appropriate for most fabrics . A smooth edge tracing wheel is used on fine or knit fabrics to avoid snagging the yarns.

A clear plastic, irregular curve used for shaping of armhole and neckline.

Narrow, woven ribbon tape Usually black to contrast with muslin. GRAPHIC TAPE is non woven tape that adheres to paper or fabric. Made in various widths, but only the narrow width is recommended for draping. Used to indicate style line.

Length wise grain:* Parllel to the selvedge * Least amount of stretch *falls easily along the lines of the body Cross wise grain:*Perpendicular to the selvedge *Somewhat more stretch than lengthwise grain

A diagonal line across the weave of the fabric. Maximum amount of stretch as compared to the lengthwise grain &crosswise grain of the fabric. Garment Bias achieved when fabric is cutoff grain at any angle. True Bias achieved when fabric is cut at 45* angle

Tearing Blocking Pressing

Draping usually begins with a designer taking a basic garment and putting it on a dressmaker's model. The garment is generally already sewn into its core shape for instance, a bias-cut dress would start out as a bias tube on the model. Next, the designer takes pieces of fabric and pins them to the garment where the drape is desired, which will give the final garment its shape. Most of the time the pinned fabric is not the same as the fabric that will be used for the final garment, but rather a similar cheaper fabric. This is because the fabric that's pinned on the dress will often be cut or marked on during the design process, which can be expensive with fine cloths.
