Brick Lane by Monica Ali Introduction

Brick Lane - named after the popular street at the heart of London's Bangladeshi community - follows the life of Nazneen, a Bangladeshi woman who moves to London at the age of 18 to marry an older man. Nazneen not only has to learn to live with Chanu, but she also has to survive in a whole new culture. Some of the Bangladeshi people she meets struggle against the traditions they left behind, while others struggle against the new traditions that their English-born children are exposed to.

In this activity, students are asked to reflect on an extract from the novel in which the clash between British and Bangladeshi cultures and traditions as experienced by the main female character in the novel is expressed through clothes. Through the worksheet presented, students are asked to reflect and discuss on the ways clothes have an influence on the way we think and behave. Level: 4th at EOI.
