OVI-RELATED CRASHES In 2012, 12,168 OVI-related crashes occurred on Ohio roads, resulting in 431 deaths and 7,299 injuries. OVI-related crashes accounted for 40% of all fatal crashes in Ohio. Of the 11,820 at-fault drivers in OVI-related crashes in 2012, 45% were between 21 and 35 years of age. Speed was a factor in 58% of all OVI-related crashes. Improper Lane Change/Drove Off Road/Improper Passing was the cause of another 13% of OVI-related crashes. OSHP OVI CITATIONS In 2012, OSHP officers issued 24,520 citations for OVI. This is a 3% increase from 2011 levels. Of these, 199 involved a felony OVI arrest, meaning the driver had previously been convicted of multiple OVIs2. More than one in five OVI citations (5,545 or 23%) included a speeding violation and 4,144 (17%) involved a violation for driving without a valid driver license. OVI citations resulted from crashes in 3,158 (13%) of cases. Younger drivers received the majority of OVI citations. Drivers aged 21-35 received 52% of all OVI citations written by OSHP troopers. Sixty-five percent (15,985) of OVI citations were issued between midnight and 4:00 a.m.; More than half (53% or 13,013) of all OVI arrests were made between 5:00 p.m. Friday and 5:00 a.m. Sunday.
