Oxidation Number

Chemistry 2.7

Oxidation Number
Oxidation number (ON) describes the degree to which an element has been oxidises or reduced. ON are written with the sign before the whole number (e.g. +3 or 1)

E.g.

For Mg2+ For Cl-

ON(Mg) = +2 ON(Cl) = -1

ON and the charge on a polyatomic ion are not the same thing. E.g. For the permanganate ion, MnO4-, ON(Mn) = +7 ON(O) = -2 How can you work that out? See rules for oxidation numbers (p 59)
