INTRODUCTION

1981 - On July 2nd the company was incorporated as Infosys Consultants Private Limited at Mumbai.
Infosys was co-founded in 1981 by N. R. Narayana Murthy, Nandan Nilekani, N. S. Raghavan, S. Gopalakrishnan, S. D. Shibulal, K. Dinesh and Ashok Arora after they resigned from Patni Computer Systems.

The company was incorporated as "Infosys Consultants Pvt Ltd." in Model Colony, Pune as the registered office and signed up its first client, Data Basics Corporation, in New York. In 1983, Infosys corporate headquarters was relocated to Bangalore.

In 1996, Infosys established the Infosys Foundation, to support the underprivileged sections of society.[11] At the outset, the Infosys Foundation implemented programs in Karnataka.
It subsequently covered Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, and Punjab in a phased manner. A dedicated team at the Foundation identifies programs in the areas of Healthcare, Education, Culture, Destitute Care and Rural Development.

FACTS ABOUT INFOSYS

Infosys is the third-largest India-based IT services company by 2012 revenues. Of this revenue, the majority comes from international business. In 2009, Infosys collected 1.2% of its income from the domestic Indian market. Few Indian companies are as well known as IT bellwether Infosys Technologies. The fact that Infosys is the country's second largest IT company by revenues, it has who's who of the global business world as its clients and is among the fastest-growing companies in the world is almost a common knowledge. But few people know that the Bangalore-based IT company was actually incorporated in Mumbai, it saw one of its founding members leave the company for greener pastures after its JV with KSA technologies fell.

STARTED WITH: Infosys which crossed $4.18 billion revenues in 2008, started with the initial capital of mere $250. Murthy borrowed the money from his wife Sudha. The company's first client was US-based Data Basics Corporation. NO COMPUTER FOR FIRST 2 YRS: It is hard to imagine starting any company today without a PC, leave an IT company. However, the country's second largest software services exporter by sales managed without a computer in the first 2 years of its existence. Back in 1981 when Infosys started its operations, the company struggled to import computers. The first minicomputer arrived at Infosys in 1983. It was a Data General 32-bit MV8000.

The very next year Infosys switched from mini to mainframes with a CAMP application for its customer Data Basics GOT ONLY 1% FROM INDIAN MARKET: In the fiscal year 2008-09, only 1% of Infosys' revenues came from the domestic market. The company set up its India business unit as late as in 2007. However, the recession in the US seems to have wisened the company who is now focusing aggressively on the domestic market.

However, in tough times clients tend to focus upon cost reduction and outsourcing - with are strategies that Infosys offers. So hard times could be profitable for Infosys. There is a new and emerging market in China as the country undergoes a huge industrial revolution
