The New England

CITY FINAL SUNDAY JANUARY 31, 1649

Charles execution
Charles was put on trial in London on 1 january, 1649. He was accused of being a murderer. Many judges decided whether he was guilty or not. The only people allowed in Parliament were the ones who Cromwell said. Very few people voted for the king. He had made for himself a special hat that had metal inside the head to protect against attack. It was Bradshaw who read out the indictment against Charles. He also refused to remove his hat as a sign of respect to the judges who have attended. Charles was allowed to go for a last walk in St Jamess park with his pet dog. His last meal was bread and wine. The man who was to execute Charles refused to do it. So did others. They were paid 100 and were allowed to wear masks so that no-one would ever know who they were. At nearly 2.00 oclock in the afternoon, Charles was led to the scaffold which was covered in black cloth. He had asked to wear thick underclothes under his shirt as he was very concerned that if he shivered in the cold, the crowd might think that he was scared. Charles gave a last speech to the crowd but very few could hear him.

Charles, executed. Oliver Cromwell our new leader.

OPINION
We asked the population what they think about the execution of their King, and these are some of the answers: - It was time we had a republic. - I think he was a good King, but he made a lot of mistakes. - His head is better in a box under the ground. - It is a very sad day for our country. I think a war is coming to England.
