1. Read 1 Corinthians 8:1-13

Background: According to 1 Cor. 7:1 the Corinthian church wrote Paul a letter and in this letter they asked
several questions – the rest of 1 Corinthians answers the questions that the church asked Paul. Chapter 8 is
a response to one of these questions. Apparently the Corinthian church asked Paul if it was ok to eat food
that had been offered to a pagan idol. During this time, the best meat would be found for sale just outside
the pagan temple after it had been offered to an idol (statue). The church was divided – some thought it
was ok to buy the meat from the temple because the god wasn’t real anyways – there is only One God and
everything else is just stone and wood. Others felt it was wrong to buy meat from the pagan temple because
others would see you and be more likely to fall into sin or to worship the pagan god. So who was right?

2. This is an eternal struggle in the church – in the past Christians have fought
over dancing, playing cards, going to movies, etc. How is this still happening
today? What issues do Christians fight over today? (ie ‘Christians shouldn’t
listen to non-Christian music’)

3. What is Paul’s solution when Christians disagree over issues like meat
offered to idols? (verses 9, 13) What should we do when there are
disagreements over certain issues?

4. What are some of the freedoms you feel you have in Christ? (movies, music,
clothes, etc) How can you make sure that your ‘freedom’ in Christ does not
become a ‘stumbling block’ to others?
