Abstract

The experiment was conducted in 2009/2010 production season at Tahtay Koraro district of Northern Ethiopia. The objective of the study was to study the effect of planting techniques on yield and yield component of rice varieties. The experiment was designed in a factorial RCBD in three replications. Data on plant height, panicle length, number of fertile tillers per plant, grain yield, days to flowering and maturity, were collected and subjected in to analysis of variance using GenStat 12th statistical software. The result revealed that there were significant variations among varieties for number of effective tillers, plant height, days to flowering, and days to maturity. There were however non-significant variations among varieties in panicle length and grain yield. On the other hand, the ANOVA showed a significant effect of the method of planting on majority of the parameters except for plant height and grain yield. The interaction effects on the other hand were significant for days to flowering and number of effective tillers. The study showed that transplanting of rice had a yield advantage over the direct sown once. Key word: Rice, transplanting, direct sowing, Ethiopia,
