Grade News / March & April As spring approaches, the first grade continues to strengthen language arts and math skills. Here are some of the highlights for the spring season. We started out Seuss Day on March 1st with a visit from the Cat in the Hat! Mrs. Esposito awarded first grade with reading certificates for daily Sustained Silent Reading. First grade has read a total of 1, 575 minutes by Dr. Seuss birthday! The day ended with Seuss Activities provided by our dedicated first grade parents. Stories, games and treats were a big hit on this Seussical day. What time is It, Mr. Crocodile? by Judy Sierra & The Grouchy Ladybug By Eric Carle are two stories that introduced our new math topic, TIME! First graders can tell time to the hour and half hour. Making a Parachute Parachute in flight The Air and Weather Science Unit consists of sequential investigations, each designed to introduce concepts in earth science. These investigations provide opportunities for first graders to explore the natural world by using simple tools to observe that air is a material that takes up space. Investigations include various ways objects can move through air. We made parachutes and paper helicopters to move through the air. We also observed the force of air pressure pushing on various objects. Cont. below

Helen Keller Harriet Tubman Our first graders are discovering and learning about important women in history. The Social Studies Unit includes Harriet Tubman, Mae Jemison, Rosa Parks and Helen Keller among other productive citizens who have made an impact in our interconnected world. The children are writing and illustrating significant accomplishments made by these extraordinary women.
