Technical Field
Hardware design for the console gaming controller

Background Information and Prior Art

Once a console has a dedicated first party controller there are rarely any chances to change the shape, most third party controllers lately are just copies. There are few opportunities to change the shape. Through this very basic figure, main portions of what make each design are outlined:

Project Description
The goal for this project is to create a prototype of a size-adjustable controller for the Xbox 360 that would have add-on pieces that snap or slide onto the main frame. These would be meant to fit the controller to larger hands.

Usage Scenario
As stated before, the main goals for this project are to make the current console controllers more comfortable and adjustable for the players. Having your hands in a certain position over and around the controllers could cause cramping and discomfort, which actually seems to be a major

complaint for the PS3 controller. By making adjustments or add-ons to the current designs the gamer will be able to adjust how the controller rests in their hands and give them a better feel throughout their game play.

Evaluation Criteria
Comfort: is the main concern for this project. The product should be comfortable for players and we aim to make it more fitting than what is available today. Practicality: The controller will be built and designed to be practical for the average and everyday user/player. Quality: We aim for our product to have the quality of around the same, in not the same, quality of the name brand controllers or well-made 3rd party. Function: The finished product will be fully able to fit the users specifications and needs.

Objectives of the Project

Main objectives as of now include: 1. Research- of hand ergonomics for the controller design, electrical components and circuit boards within each controller design, the areas of concern with each main controller designs and what people have said about each one, and mathematical measurements for the intended designs. 2. Creating the 2D designs will follow. 3. Once these are done, 3D models will be created for the designs. Through the use of a 3D modeling software- this will then move to the use of the 3D printer. 4. Testing of the shape and designs will follow.

Tasks Associated with each Objective

The numbers of the Tasks below correspond with the numbering of the Objectives.

1. For the research objective, tasks will be divided up between the two of us for each section required in researching and will be combined after each section is completed. 2. Creating the 2D designs will follow the same nature. Slitting up the tasks of the, for now, chosen two different designs. These will then be compared and modified, etc. 3. With the 3D modeling task, comes also the task of modeling tutorials and a modeling class. This will take time, yes, but skill will be much needed for quality.

4. Testing out the shape will take time and numerous sessions to ensure results. Surveys will be included as well.

Description of Design Prototype

As mention previously, the designs will go through a long process from research, 2D, 3D modeling, and a basic tangible design prototype. The end result will either consist of both designs being developed or one favored design. The completion goal will be met once one or both designs are functioning as intended: being size adjustable and comfortable for extended use for the everyday player.

Evaluation Plan
After the prototype is made through the 3D printer, there will be, as stated above, surveys and tests to see if the design or designs are working well. If not, changes will be made and this process will continue until perfected. After a 3D print prototype is created- a construction of the actual add-on or controller will be made. This will also go through testing processes.

Appendices
See attached survey.

Controller Questionnaire From the video game controllers youve used, which would you say was your favorite? Why?

1.

2. From the video game controllers youve used, which would you say was your least favorite? Why?

3. In your opinion, is the PS3 or Xbox 360 controller better in terms of comfort? Why?

4. Given the opportunity, do you think you would purchase a size adjustable controller for yourself or a friend?

5. Have you or a friend ever experienced discomfort with a controller to the point where it became noticeable/took away from the gaming experience? If so, explain

6. Have you or a friend ever purchased a controller that was either bigger or smaller than the stock controllers produced by the same manufacturer as your game console? If so, why? What did you like and dislike with the 3rd party controller?

7. Your Glove Size

To find out your glove size, measure (in inches) around your hand with a tape measure across your palm. You should use your dominant hand, the right if you are right-handed, and the left if you are left-handed. Glove Size Equivalents Some manufacturers indicate glove sizes by number and others by letters standing for Small, Medium, Large, etc. We always indicate the size of a pair of gloves the same way the manufacturer does. Use the table at the right to translate between "letter sizes" and "number sizes". A) Measure around the hand at the fullest part (exclude thumb)

B) measure from the tip of the middle finger to the base of the hand

C) Use the LARGEST of these two measurements for the correct size glove D) If you are RIGHT handed, take measurements from your RIGHT hand F) If you are LEFT handed, take measurements from your LEFT hand G) The number of inches measured equals the size of the glove (example: A 7" measurement equals a size 7 glove)
