damage. As regards existing structures, it is necessary to evaluate and strengthen them based on evaluation criteria before an earthquake. The horizontal reversible seismic forces are
as walls, beams and columns that were bearing only vertical loads before the earthquake, have now to carry horizontal bending and shearing effects as well. When the bending tension exceeds due to earthquake
the vertical compression, net tensile stress will occur. If the building material is weak in tension such as brick or stone masonry, cracking effective occurs which reduces the
shown in Fig 2.2. It follows that the strength in tension and shear is important for earthquake resistance.
