223 LTR Build: Cut and Thread The Barrel
223 LTR Build: Cut and Thread The Barrel
I wanted a Light Tactical Rifle in 223. I chose to put one together as follows: Materials: Remington 700 ADL 223 Varmint Barrel Bell & Carlson Stock DBM Atlasworxs Magazine Compensator SWAF Rings Bushnell Elite 1040 Scope
The steps can be done in any order. Below is the order I worked on them.
I cut the barrel with a hacksaw and set it up in the lathe. I turned down the end to .500 x .600 long for the -28 threads. I then used a die to thread the end of the barrel.
A quick look at the print showed me that I would need to cut 1degree and 6 degree tapers in the pocket. I decided to make a fixture to mount the stock to that had the tapers added to the sides. I then could quickly push the fixture against the stops on my mill table to cut all the contours.
I threaded the pillars on the stock with 3/8-16 tap, (the holes thru are .312). I then made some short posts to hold the stock to the fixture.
I turned the head of a cap screw so I could pick up the screw center of one of the pillars with an indicator on the mill. The other (2) threaded pieces were used to keep the bottom metal in the correct location as it is fit to the stock. The correct pillar height for this DBM is .72 and 1.02.
Here is the bottom metal installed. I had to hand fit the corner. This went pretty quick once the walls were all cut at the correct angles.
Changing Barrels
I made this action wrench out of some 1 square stock I had. I used a boring head to cut the 1.355 diameter action hole. It worked very well. I wrapped tape around the action so I would scratch it.
The best mount out there is one from McCann Industries. I put one on a HRT rifle I built a while back and it worked great. I have fat fingers and like the cut-out over the ejection port. When I was planning this build, the website had them for $107 + shipping. I just checked and it is $112 + shipping. I need to get one ordered soon.
