Tech Rich Lesson Plan

Type of setting: Public High School Number of Students: 28 Special Needs: Highly functioning student with IEP, receives extra time on tests, but fully functions in the classroom Grade Level: 10 Subject: US History II Topic: The End of the Cold War I. Purpose: Students will learn about the collapse of the Berlin Wall. II. Student Objectives: 1. After reading from the textbook, the students will be able to create an accurate timeline recording the events of the Cold War. 2. Students will be able to write a brief summary of the fall of the Berlin Wall; this summary must include dates, significant people as well as how the US responded to the fall. III. New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards: 1. 6.2.12.A.5.a- Explain how and why differences in ideologies and policies between the United States and the USSR resulted in a cold war, the formation of new alliances, and periodic military clashes. 2. 6.2.12.B.5.b- Analyze the reasons for the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union, and evaluate the impact of these events on changing national boundaries in Eastern Europe and Asia. IV. Procedures 1. Class will start with primary source material, for this lesson the hook will be the video. The video will be of a newscast from November 9, 1989, which is the night that the wall collapsed. 2. Students will then form groups. Within these groups there will be different positions such as fact checker, director, on-screen talent and the producer. Every student will help to write the initial script. 3. The students will work together to create a news report as though they are covering footage of the night that the Wall collapsed.

4. The students will be given two iPad per group, this will facilitate cooperation and to insure that the students are communicating. The students will use one iPad for their notes and pre writing. This iPad will also be used as the teleprompter using the Teleprompt+ app. The second iPad will use the ReelDirector app to film and edit their footage. 5. In post production, students will need to create an introduction to their news show that includes an animated graphic and sound. The students will also be required to incorporate live footage from the event. V. Materials:
1. Textbook 2. iPads with Reel Director program

VI. Assessment: 1. News reports will be graded based on content, cooperation, and effort. (see attached) VII. Follow up: This lesson will be the end of the Cold War Unit. Once the news reports have been completed, we will watch the videos as a class before we begin our last lesson of the unit. In our last lesson we will have a day of making predictions as to the lasting effects of the Soivet Union and the Cold War, followed by a test for the unit.
