Procedures: Procedures:
Introduction (2 min): Today, we are going to look closer into turning points in a story. Then, we are going to zoom into an important quote in chapter 23. Steps for instruction Engagement, Demonstration (10 min) Lets start by defining turning points I will start using the prezi presentation to define turning points. I will be using examples of different types of stories. Participation, Practice (15 min) When I get to the slide of the activity, I will explain what they are going to be doing next. Students will work in pairs, one is the writer and the other is the presenter. In pairs, they will choose a turning point from TKAM using their books and notes. After ten minutes of work time, I will instruct them to share in their groups (the presenter will be sharing their findings). To end this part of the lesson, I will give a summary of turning points that other pairs have found.

After students are done with sharing, I will bring them back to whole group. Quoatiation Analysis (10 min) In chapter 23, there is a turning point in Jems life. He is growing up. When we are small kids, we do not see differences in skin. We learn from our parents, or the media about what race is. There is a quote in chapter 23 from Jem, it says as follows: "... there's four kinds of folks in this world. There's the ordinary kind like us and the neighbors, there's the kind like the Cunninghams out in the woods, the kind like the Ewells down at the dump and the African Americans. " Do you agree with Jem? Do you think there are different kinds of people in this world? Do you think we are all different? What kind of people do you think there is in the world? I will ask students to write their response on a note card. They will write for 7 minutes. Closure (3 min): Remember that turning points change the life or the way of thinking of a character. You know, in real life there are also turning points. We are constantly changing how we think and how we live because of our experiences, sometimes even because of the things we read.

Strategies for students requiring additional assistance:

Instructions of the activities will be on the smarboard during the activities, so students know what they are supposed to be doing.
