Urban spaces, particularly central plazas and squares, were important social spaces in late 19th century cities where gente decente, the political, commercial, and professional elite, would display their consumption and leisure activities. As cities modernized, public spaces like plazas, green areas, and portales became areas for vendors while also reflecting the material improvements of the city planned by authorities, such as wider boulevards and streets, and regulated by police and sanitation workers to keep the public areas clean, safe, and orderly at night.
