Abstract: Jovan Cviji was a great geographer from the first half of 20th century. In this article, we considered the
issue of position and role that Serbia has at Balkan Peninsula, in the context of Cviji's theory about
characteristics of integration and permeation, as well as about the opposite characteristics of isolation and
separation. This theory has become important in recent time through its relation with the center-periphery
theory. The aim of this article is to compare Cviji's images of the position of Serbia at the first half of 20th century
with present situation.

Summary
CVIJICS PERCEPTION OF GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION OF SERBIA
The author has critically observed the visions of geographical situation of the territory of Serbia by Jovan
Cviji, which are deeply rooted in the national iconography of Serbs. This article considers both myths and reality,
which are related to the position of Serbia in cultural, geopolitical and geostrategic aspects. On the basis of realized
benefits and damages for Serbian national state, which are the consequences of its geographical position, the author
made conclusions that performances of geographical position are in misbalance with contemporary reality. The
position of Serbia had been favorable for transit and international cooperation, but unfavorable for self-defense and
territorial cohesion. This article observes determinants of the position of Serbia from aspects of the centre of power
European Union, as well as from aspects of periphery, such as Balkan from the European point of view.
