THERMAL ENERGY PLANT

ASSIGNMENT 1
A double-acting diesel engine for a ship has eight cylinders with bore 1m and stroke 1.3m. The piston-rod diameter is 150mm.
Determine:
(a) The capacity of the engine;
(b) The distance between the top face of the piston and the top of the cylinder head in the TDC position and the distance between the
bottom face of the piston and the bottom of the cylinder in the BDC position for a compression ratio of 18:1 on both sides of the piston.
Assume compression starts at the extreme stroke positions and that the piston and cylinder heads are flat.
SOLUTION
Piston details: Bore diameter

Stroke

Rod diameter

Compression ratio: 18 : 1
Number of cylinders:
As the engine is double acting the capacity of the bottom side of the piston is reduced by the volume of the rod.
Sweep volume for top
side.
Cross-sectional area of bore multiplied by stroke

Sweep volume for bottom
side.
Cross-sectional area of bore minus cross-sectional area of rod multiplied by stroke

Capacity of engine (sweep volume x 8 cylinders)

(a) The capacity of the engine is 16.15 m
