Dear Parents and Guardians, We have been informed today that a student at the Citadel has been diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. The student is being treated by health care professionals. The Department of Health has contacted individuals who have had close contact with the student, and those people are being treated. Officials from the Department of Health have informed Reading School District officials that there is generally no risk to the school population. Symptoms of bacterial meningitis include: high fever, headache, and stiff neck are common symptoms of meningitis in anyone over the age of 2 years. These symptoms can develop over several hours, or they may take 1 to 2 days. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, discomfort looking into bright lights, confusion, and sleepiness. If your child has any of these symptoms or you have any concerns about your child, please
call his or her private health care professional. In addition, you can contact Certified School Nurses at the Citadel at 484-258-7365 or the Reading School District Supervisor of School Health at 610-370-8578 We will continue to provide you with information as directed by health care professionals and the Department of Health.
