Microchip Unveils Industrys First Ion and Photo SmokeDetector ICs with Alarm Memory
Low-Power ICs Enable Smoke Detectors With 10-Year Battery Life
Microchip announced the industrys first Ion and photo smokedetector ICs to offer alarm memory. The low-power RE46C162/3 Ion and
RE46C165/6/7/8

(RE46C16X) photo smoke-detector ICs make it easy to quickly determine which detector in an interconnected loop

triggered an alarm. The ICs low energy use enables smoke detectors with a battery life of 10 years, and an interconnect filter enables a connection to other devices, such as CO detectors. Homes often have interconnected smoke detectors, to remotely alert the resident about remote smoke events. When an alarm is falsely triggered, also known as nuisance tripping, it is difficult to determine which smoke detector set off the alarm. The alarm-memory feature available on the RE46C16X ICs enables the detector that caused the fault to be easily identified, which greatly reduces costs associated with installing and troubleshooting these types of smoke-detector systems. A charge-dump feature allows the alarm on all interconnected devices to stop sooner.

Precision Operational Amplifiers: The Right Solution for Your Design

Microchips op amp portfolio offers over 100 unique products spanning bandwidths from 10 kHz up to 60 MHz. All of Microchips op amps are designed on a low power CMOS process and support operating voltages as low as 1.4V. All amplifiers offer extremely low quiescent current for the given bandwidth and support rail-to-rail outputs, with almost all products also supporting rail-to-rail operation on the inputs. For applications that require high precision amplifiers, Microchip offers a variety of low offset voltage amplifiers featuring EPROM trimming, auto-zeroing and mCal Technology. Lets take a closer look at these various low offset voltage architectures. The first architecture mentioned is the EPROM trimmed amplifiers. These amplifiers use EPROM to correct the input offset voltage of the amplifier. This is done during the final test of the device at the Microchip factory and is a very cost effective way to provide an amplifier with low initial offset voltage. The other advantage of this architecture is that it does not require any customer inputs (the amplifier is trimmed at the factory and doesnt require the customer to do anything). As you can imagine, the EPROM trimming does take up a certain amount of silicon area, and hence the EPROM trimmed devices can be somewhat limited in terms of what packages can be offered. Also, like a general purpose amplifier, this architecture will be sensitive to environmental conditions such as temperature, changes in common mode or operating voltage. The auto-zero architecture is a continuously self-correcting architecture that utilizes a null amplifier to correct the offset voltage of the main amplifier. This architecture enables ultra low offset error (about 100 times better then an EPROM trimmed amplifier), low offset drift, eliminates 1/f noise and provides superior PSRR and CMRR performance. Since this architecture is continuously self-correcting the input offset voltage, it is inherently insensitive to the environment. So changes over temperature, aging, changes in operating voltage, etc will have very little effect on the accuracy of the auto-zero amplifier. Finally, the self-correcting circuitry is all contained on-chip, so no customer input is required. From the system level point of view, the device looks and functions just like a standard operational amplifier (only with exceptional performance). mCal Technology provides yet another means of enabling high precision operational amplifiers by implementing an on-board calibration circuit. Much like an EPROM trimmed device, this calibration results in very low initial offset voltages. However, unlike EPROM trimmed amplifiers, the on-board calibration circuitry will be active upon power up or based on an external calibration pin. This enables the user to re-calibrate the amplifier as often as they like. By re-calibrating the amplifier somewhat frequently, the accuracy of the amplifier can become somewhat insensitive to the environment. For example, if a customer is very concerned about drift over temperature, they can minimize this drift error by re-calibrating the device every time the temperature changes by 5 degrees. Microchip Technology offers a wide variety of operational amplifiers, including various architectures that address the need for high precision devices. These architectures include the use of EPROM trimming, the self-correcting autozeroing technique and the unique mCal Technology, which provides on-board calibration circuitry.

Looking to Enhance Your Embedded Control Designs?

instruction manuals and data sheet review or trial and error attempts to learn individually. Market forces constantly press companies to add functionality and features to their products often outside their areas of core competence. As a result, engineers must continually broaden their knowledge base. Microchips technology classes are intended to help engineers gain an understanding of a new field. In tough economic times, companies often look for ways to trim expenses as a means to cope with a downturn in sales. One of the areas often targeted for cutbacks is employee training. There is not only the direct cost of the training to contend with, but also travel expenses and time an employee spends away from the job. During this challenging business climate, however, competitive pressures and technology changes dont stop and it is training that can help a company be better positioned to take advantage of the potential upswing. Microchip, with its global network of Regional Training Centers (RTCs) and third-party training partners, is here to help companies stay competitive with cost-effective, local training. To help companies deal with issues of travel expense and time, classes are given not only in Microchips facilities, but are also taken on the road. Customized customer premise sessions can be scheduled offering the most convenience. Time away can be managed more efficiently with the flexibility of half or full day class sessions. To be effective in teaching, instruction must take into account the needs and expertise level of the attendee. Microchips Regional Training Center classes are developed to provide a coordinated flow, enabling engineers to implement a solution to their product development needs. Instruction is developed and presented in product, technology and implementation classes that are grouped into application based curriculum. Each curriculum flow enables the individual to engage with the training at a level that meets his or her current knowledge and needs. The intent is to provide training that is relevant to each attendee while eliminating the frustration often associated with attending classes that present too much known information or assume a level of knowledge beyond what the attendee currently possesses. Product/tool classes provide knowledge on how Microchips products and development tools operate. This knowledge provides the foundation upon which all application instruction is based. Attendance at one of these classes can provide significant value through the reduction in time associated with Implementation classes combine elements of product and technology instruction to teach engineers how to design a real world application. Classes at this level provide how-to instruction rather than what or why instruction. Microchip is currently offering classes in the following curriculum: DSP , Ethernet, Human Interface, Motor Control, Power Management, Signal Chain, System Design and USB. Future curriculum is expected to include CAN/LIN, IrDA, Lighting and RF. With a worldwide network of Regional Training Centers and certified third-party trainers, Microchip makes it easy to enhance your technical skills, with locations in nearly every metropolitan area across the world!
