WESTMERE FIRE DEPARTMENT BATTLES SECOND HOUSE FIRE IN MARCH GUILDERLAND, NY On Saturday March 30 at 5:56pm, the Westmere Fire Department and its mutual aid company, Guilderland Fire Department, were called for a reported structure fire at 9 Shepard Avenue. Westmere Chief Dave Szary was the first fire department unit to arrive and confirmed a residential structure fire with flames visible. The departments made an initial attack to contain the fire to the room of origin within the first five to seven minutes. After approximately 10 to 15 minutes, the fire was knocked down and crews began salvage and overhaul operations. According to fire department officials, the firefighters were able to contain the fire to a single room. However due to the age of the home, the crews had to perform extensive overhaul. The home also sustained associated smoke and water damage as a result of fighting the fire. Despite the Easter holiday weekend, the volunteers had sufficient manpower in place to respond to the fire. According to Chief David Szary, Our volunteers are highly committed to this community, each and every time the station siren activates for an emergency. Our siren is not only a way to alert our volunteers that someone needs our help but reassurance to the community that we are on our way. The Westmere Fire Department was assisted in its initial attack by the Guilderland Fire Department; the Fort Hunter Fire Department provided a Firefighter Assist and Search Team (F.A.S.T.) and North Bethlehem Fire Department provided firefighter rehabilitation. The McKownville Fire Department provided one engine to the Westmere Fire Station for cover during the fire. Guilderland EMS and the Western Turnpike Rescue Squad provided medical support. Fire investigators determined that the fire started in a front room but could not determine the source or point of origin due the damage caused by the fire. However, the fire does not appear to be suspicious. There were no reports of injuries to residents or firefighters; however pets from the home were taken to a local veterinarian for evaluation. ###
