TWS 2: Lesson Objectives

Lesson 1: Symmetry- Math Objective: Students explore figures to determine if they have line symmetry, rotational symmetry, or no symmetry. Standard: CCSS.Math.Content.4.G.A.3- Recognize a ling of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that a figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry. (Common Core) Alignment: This standard is now a 4th grade standard under the new Common Core standards, but Mrs. Lewis asked me to teach this lesson because it was previously listed as a 5th grade standard under the SC Math standards. My objective matches the standard because when students are finished with the lesson, they will be able to determine if an object has line symmetry, rotational symmetry, or no symmetry. Just as stated in the CC standard, students are given their own shape cut outs and are allowed to fold the shapes to determine symmetry. After using a hand-on approach, they have to find the symmetry of several shapes on paper. This is appropriate for them because before I taught this lesson, they had just learned about transformations (translations, rotations, and reflections). Reflections introduce symmetry by flipping an object over a line, making a reflection. Line symmetry is just an expansion of reflection; only it is within the shape itself. Lesson 2: Surface Area- Math Objective: Students use figures to find the surface area of rectangular prisms. Standard: CCSS.Math.Content.6.G.A.4- Represent threedimensional figures using nets made of rectangles and triangles, and use the nets to find surface area of these figures.

Apple these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems. (Common Core) Alignment: This standard is now 6th grade, but it was previously 5th grade in SC Math standards. The objective fits the standard because students use rectangular nets to make their own rectangular prism. They use these to find the surface area and then read real-world problem where they are required to find the surface area. The standard and objective is appropriate for the grade level because they have just learned how to fine volume and area. Lesson 3: Shared Reading- ELA Objective: Students will listen to a story and identify the main details and summarize the text. Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.5.2- Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text. Alignment: This objective fits the standard because the lesson involves the students to identify the main character, the characters want or need, the problem, what they do about the problem, and the conclusion. They identify the main idea or theme in the end and have to summarize the story in 2-3 sentences. This goes with the standard. This is appropriate for 5th graders because they are focusing a lot on writing. This strategy is a great way for students to work on writing, summarizing, and reading and understanding a text. Lesson 4: Solubility- Science Objective: Students will explore how temperature affects the solubility of a sugar cube in water.

Standard: 5-4.6 Explain how temperature change, particle, size, and stirring affect the rate of dissolving. (SC Science Standards) Alignment: This objective matches the standard because students conduct an experiment that tests 3 different water temperature and its affect on solubility. They are required to explain in the end, how the different temperatures affect how quickly the sugar cube dissolves. They will be able to conclude that the higher the temperature of the water, the quicker the sugar dissolves. This is appropriate for 5th graders because they have recently studied solute, solvent, and concentration. Lesson 5: Chemical Reactions- Science Objective: Students will explore properties of chemical reactions by conducting and observing three experiments. Standard: 5-4.7 Illustrate the fact that when some substances are mixed together, they chemically combine to form a new substance that cannot easily be separated. Alignment: This objective works with the standard because by exploring chemical reactions, they will find that 2 of them chemically combine to form a new substance, which is what the standard includes. They will also be illustrating this by drawing what they see during the experiment. This is appropriate for 5th graders because they are being introduced to chemical reactions to be prepared for the 6th grade.
