Canadas National Symbols Moose All about Maple Syrup Most countries have national symbols or icons. Some examples of the type of things are animals, birds and flowers. For example, the bald eagle is the national symbol of the USA, the kiwi is one of New Zealands national symbols and the rose is Englands symbol. Two of the national symbols of Canada are the moose and the maple leaf. The moose is a large deer. It has another name the elk in Europe. Moose and elk live in Canada, parts of the USA, and in Scandinavia. Moose live in forests and woods. They eat wood from trees and grass. They also eat near lakes because they like water plants. Moose can be very heavy. The maximum weight for an adult male is about 820 kg. Their antlers are very long too up to 2 metres. As a result, they are quite dangerous on the roads. A lot of accidents happen when cars hit moose. The plant symbol of Canada is the leaf of the maple tree. It is on the Canadian flag. Sugar maples are very important in Canada, because the sap of the trees is used to make a sweet syrup. There are a lot of other products made from maple sap. People make sweets and sugar from it. Quebec is the world's largest producer of maple syrup. People also use the wood from maple trees to make bowling products like pins.
