William Xia Melissa H Gurney AP Language and Composition September 22 Music Music is more than the simple combination of sounds. Music brings out life in people. There are many different styles and genres of music. In the 16 years Ive been in this world, I have yet to meet a person that dislikes music. Music is an expressive form of art and just like many other forms, brings people together through common interest, creativity, and beauty. Michael Pierides began learning piano at 4. Every time I went to his house, he played piano and it made me want to learn. I became envious of his talent. The melody of his fingers against the keys inspired me. I wanted to play as skillfully as he did and create something just as amazing as him. So I began to take lessons. They felt slow and without direction at first but eventually I began to see progress. Since my mom forced me to practice everyday, I began to resent piano. I took NYSSMA level 6 for piano before I had entered high school and stopped taking lessons. I hated practicing everyday but I emerged with the ability to sight-read sheet music without the help of a teacher. Now, I learn songs, I play music, and I enjoy it whenever I have the chance. From playing piano, I have developed a deep appreciation for music. And I am glad that I learned to play because I feel as is if my love for this art can be shared with others. Music has helped me reach out to others I did not even know in my school and those individuals have now become my friends. I interact with those who also love music because those are the

2 people who you can share your music with. Whether its sharing a song you enjoy listening to or hearing someone play an instrument. All of these things bring people together. I learned piano and now have a deeply rooted passion for music because I wanted to create and become a part of it. I wish to further expand the appreciation I feel at your school. I believe music has the ability to bring out the spirits of humans and join them. My friend Michael showed me his talent and passed on his love of music to me. I play for enjoyment, I play for stadiums full of people, and now I want to play for you.
