The angle that your line of sight make with a line drawn horizontally is called the Angle of Elevation.

EX 3) You are measuring the height of a Sitka spruce tree in Alaska. You stand 45 ft from the base of the tree. You measure the angle of elevation from a point on the ground to the top of the tree to 59 degrees. To estimate the height of the tree, you can write a trigonometric ratio that involves the height h and the known length of 45 feet. Find h.

EX 4) The escalator at the Wilshire/Vermont Metro Rail Station in Los Angeles rises 76 feet at a 30 degree angle. To find the distance d, a person travels on the escalator stairs, you can write a trigonometric ration that involves the hypotenuse and the known leg length of 76 feet. Find d.

A ladder is leaning against a wall. The foot of the ladder is 10 feet from the wall. The ladder makes an 65 degree angle with the ground. Find how high up on the wall does the ladder reach?

During a flight, a hot air balloon is observed by two persons standing at points A and B as illustrated in the diagram. The angle of elevation of point A is 28 degrees. Point A is 1.8 miles from the balloon as measured along the ground.

a. What is the height (h)?

b. Point B is 2.8 miles from point A. Find the angle of elevation of point B.
