Conditional Sentences

Type 1
Examples: If it rains, we will stay at home.

You wont pass the test if you dont study.


If there isnt a hotel, where will you stay?

FORM: (If + Present Simple + Future Simple)


USE: We use the first type to express a real possibility in the future.

Type 2
Examples: If I won some money, I would go

around the world.


Id give up my job if I didnt like it. If you needed help, who would you ask? FORM: If + Past Simple + would USE: We use the second type to express an unreal situation in the present. The situation is improbable or imaginary.

Type 3
Examples: If I had gone to the party, I

would have met lots of people.


I would have eaten something if Id been hungry.

FORM: If + Past Perfect + would + perfect infinitive


USE: We use the third type to refer to an unreal situation in the past.
