Romeo and Juliet Act 2 Scene 2 Balcony Scene Film Comparison Friday, April 5, 2013 Summary: Todays lesson

n continues the discussion of the famous Balcony Scene in Romeo and Juliet. Today we will watch the scene in Zeffirelli and Luhrmans versions of the film. Students will fill out a Venn Diagram as they watch. Finally, students will decide which version of the movie portrays the scene more effectively and explain why using support from the text. Objectives: SWBAT to compare and contrast two different film portrayals of Act II Scene II. SWBAT analyze the directors decision making in the scenes. SWBAT defend an argument using specific supporting details from the movies. Teacher Activities: Materials: DVDs of both movies, Ven Diagrams Direct Instruction: Today we are watching two versions of the balcony scenes. We will be filling out a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the two as we watch. At the end of our viewing, you will need to decide which version of the film is more effective at portraying the story and emotions of the Shakespeare text. Checks for Understanding: Answer student questions viewing Student Activities: Guided Practice: Stop after each clip to help students fill out their Venn Diagrams. Assessment: Students will complete a five-sentence paragraph defending one of the movies as the better film portrayal of the scene. Students must cite evidence from the movie to support their decision making.
