An essential building block to the lifelong health of young people is their access to comprehensive and accurate sexual health information appropriate for their age, cognitive development, and cultural context. Opt provides sexuality and reproductive health education to students, parents, educators and other professionals. School programs are based on the most current objectives set by the BC Ministry of Education, and the Canadian Guidelines for Sexual Health Education. Comprehensive workshops for professionals are of great benefit to those providing sexual health education to clients, such as students, teachers, counselors, community health nurses, youth and childcare workers, and physicians. Kristen Gilbert is Opts Senior Educator and is often referred to as our education expert! Since 2006, she has travelled the province for Opt, providing her charismatic and often humorous perspective on sexual health issues to students, teachers, and parents. Kristen teaches sex education to students in Elementary and Secondary schools, to students with special needs, and to youth in custody. She will be in Kaslo this year from May 13 to May 16. Talking to children about human sexuality and reproduction can be difficult for parents and caregivers. The Askable Adult workshop is an interactive program that helps parents explore why they might feel uncomfortable talking about sex with their children, and offers strategies for overcoming these feelings. Dental hygienists across Canada want to remind you that they specialize in the prevention of dental disease and the maintenance of oral health. In addition to regular dental cleaning twice a year, you play an important role in maintaining good dental health and in preventing oral disease. Using correct tooth brushing and flossing techniques daily, limiting sugary or acidic food and drink and avoiding tobacco products can help you to keep your teeth for a lifetime. Hobbs is one of the cuddliest, most loving cats weve ever had. He will give you hugs when you kneel down beside him, and loves to be held and brushed. Hobbs has quite a thick, beautiful coat, which will require daily grooming. He gets along with other cats, and doesnt seem to mind dogs. Suzuki Celebration Concert

The annual collaborative concert of Suzuki violin, viola, and guitar teachers in the West Kootenay takes place in Nelson at the Bethel Christian Centre 623 Gordon Road on Sunday, April 21 at 6:30 pm. The theme is Together in Music which beautifully reflects the Suzuki philosophy. This family friendly concert by kids, for kids involves fifty students from the studios of Miranda Hughes, Stephanie Judy, and David Stewart. The program includes familiar folk songs and engaging classical music with a few surprises. A highlight of this event is the Suzuki playthrough beginning with the most advanced repertoire and working backwards gathering students until everyone is involved in Variations on Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, aka the Suzuki National Anthem. This one-day event provides participants with an opportunity to give away used items to those who may find value in them. This is also a chance for residents to search their community for their neighbours unwanted treasures. On April 20, residents are encouraged to place any gently-used, unwanted household goods together at the front of their property in a location that can be safely accessed by treasure hunters.
