Activity 2 Target Grammar Structure: Is/Are there a/any/anybody/anything...? There is a/nobody/nothing. Level of students: intermediate ESL students Duration: 30 min Instructions: Pre-task: (10 mins)

Teacher explains the instructions to students: one student will receive one picture and the other student will receive a similar picture. The two students are required to find out the missing objects in either of the pictures without seeing each others pictures . So, they need to ask questions to each other using the sentence structure: Is there any.../anyone in/at/on a certain place? Model the activity by using the sample pictures as below.

Teacher demonstrates sample sentences to students. For instance, student who has sample A can ask, Is there anyone in your picture?. Student who has sample B will respond, No, there isnt. Or student who has sample B may ask, Is there anything on the desk?. Student who has sample A may answer Yes, there is a telephone on the desk.

Q: Is there anything on the table? A: Yes, there are a wallet and a clock on the table./ No, there is nothing on the table.

Students answer in a complete sentence structure: Picture A has , but picture B doesnt have ..., or Picture B doesnt have , but picture A has ... .
