CIVIL PEACE BY CHINUA ACHEBE

PREPARED BY NUR AQILAH RAIHANAH ARIPIN

SUMMARY SETTING

SUMMARY
Written by contemporary author Chinua Achebe, "Civil Peace" represents a depiction of the depth of the African experience. The book is set in eastern Nigeria during the postcivil war.

Achebe introduces the reader to Jonathan Iwegbu, a main character in the book. He is happy as a post-civil war survivor. Both he and his family, which includes a wife and four children, feel happy that the war hasn't destroyed their livelihood.

Iwegbu is able to pursue entrepreneurial ambitions and converts his old bicycle into a taxi vehicle, which allows him the opportunity to move forward, earn money, and sustain him and his family.

After earning enough money for relocation expenses, Iwegbu travels back to his hometown, Enugu, which is the capital city of Biafra of eastern Nigeria. He is elated to find that the civil war hasn't destroyed his home completely; he begins the process of rebuilding not only his home, but also his life as a whole.

Although "Civil Peace" is set mainly in the countryside, Achebe's character is able to move forward in conducting business dealings, engaging in relationships with neighbours, and ensuring economic protection for both the business and family.
