P1 Density Calculations

Question 1 A rectangular brick of dimensions 5.0 cm x 8.0 cm x 20.0 cm has a mass of 2.5 kg. Calculate: (a) Its volume; (b) Its density; Question 2 A solid steel cylinder has a diameter of 12 mm and a length of 85 mm. Calculate: (a) Its volume; (b) Its mass when the density is 7800 kg m-3. Question 3 An alloy is formed from aluminium and magnesium. The density of aluminium is 2700 kg m-3 and the density of magnesium is 1700 kg m-3. The alloy has a volume of 1.8 x 104 3 m , of which 60% is aluminium and 40% is magnesium. Calculate: (a) The mass of the aluminium; (b) The mass of the magnesium. Question 4 A science lab is 8.0 m long by 5.0 m wide by 4.0 m high. It has a volume of 160 m3. (a) How much kg of air does this room contain? Density of air in room temperature is about 1.3 kg m-3. (b) Explain the significance of it being in room temperature? Question 5 Estimate the mass of a platinum wedding ring by considering it to be a cylinder of length 70 mm and inner diameter of 3.0 mm and a thickness of 2.0 mm. Density of platinum is 21500 kg m-3. Question 6 Explain what happens to the density of a material of a wire when it is stretched. Question 7 An empty paint tin of diameter 0.150 m and of height 0.120 m has a mass of 0.22 kg. It is filled with paint to within 7 mm of the top. Its total mass is then 6.50 kg. Calculate, for the paint in the tin: (a) The mass; (b) The volume; (c) The density.
