Application Evaluation Criteria for Masters Entry Clinical Nurse Program

Faculty who are members of the admissions committee review the completed dossier of each qualified applicant to the UCLA School of Nursing. The application is evaluated using the criteria listed below:

GRADE POINT AVERAGE Minimum GPA of 3.0 or better in academic courses (last 60 semester/90 quarter units of baccalaureate program), and completion of or ability to complete required prerequisite courses prior to beginning program.

II. ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE Quality of preparation. Strong grades in prerequisites (B or better is preferred, C meets minimum requirement), scholarly progress coursework. Other evidence of scholarship.

III. LIFE/VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE Indications of critical thinking/scholarship; program development; participation in research; publications; participation in professional organizations; community service. IV. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE Self-assessment of potential for success in a university graduate program. Clearly stated goals for nursing practice. Multi-cultural experiences/bilingual ability indicated. If appropriate, evidence of economic, educational and social disadvantagement. The biographical goal must be clear, concise and demonstrate a logical development of ideas with correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. V. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION Three personal recommendations (on School of Nursing forms from professionals who have a supervisory, educational or mentoring relationship to you) indicating scholarly ability and evidence of potential for nursing. The relationship to the applicant and quality of the resource will be considered. Select persons to complete your recommendation forms who know you well enough to assess your academic, professional, and personal skills and abilities.
