2 July 2001 SUBJECT: Article 501-6(b)(3) in the 1999 NEC Dear Bussmann Customer, A reference to a nonindicating, silver sand, current-limiting type fuse in the 1996 NEC has been revised in the 1999 NEC. It now states that a fuse that is nonindicating, filled, and current-limiting type or where the operating element is enclosed within a chamber that is hermetically sealed can be permitted to be used within general-purpose enclosures in a Class I, Division 2 area as described by the NEC. The description silver sand was used as a generic reference in describing filled, current limiting fuses. It was not a description for a specific type of fuse link or filler material. The following is a list of nonindicating, filled, current-limiting fuses: Class CC LP-CC 1/2 through 30 amps KTK-R 1/2 through 30 amps FNQ-R 8/10 through 30 amps Class T JJN 1 through 1200 amps JJS 1 through 800 amps Class J JKS 1 through 600 amps LPJ_SP 1 through 600 amps Class G SC 1/2 through 60 amps The following is a list of hermetically sealed fuses: Medium Voltage JCH-30 JCH 2R through 24 R JCG-30 JCG 2R through 24 R If you have any questions or need further assistance, contact Application Engineering at (636) 527-1270 or by fax at (636) 527-1607.
