ELE401 - Field Theory: Tutorial Problems Week 9

1. Magnetic Forces and Torques (In free space = o ) An innitely long line of current I1 = 6 [A] ows along the z-axis in the + az direction. Another current I2 = 2 [A] ows in the triangular circuit ABC in a counter-clockwise direction. The points are A(0,2,2), B(0,6,2) and C(0,6,6) and the current I2 ows from A to B to C and back to A. (a) Use the expression dF2 = I2 dl B1 where B1 is the magnetic ux density vector eld due to I1 , then solve for the force FCA i.e. force on the current clement connecting C to A. (b) Use the expression d T = r dF2 to solve for the torque TAB (i.e. on the current element connecting A to B) taken about the origin. (c) Solve for the total force FT = FAB + FBC + FCA (d) Solve for the total torque TT = TAB + TBC + TCA taken about the origin. 2. Magnetic Materials and Bound Currents An Innitely long coaxial structure, centered on the z-axis consists of an inner conducting cylindrical core, surround by two dierent non-current carrying magnetic material sleeves. completing the cylindrical shell. Region (1): < a; r = 4 carrier current Io in + az direction. Region (2): a < < b; r = 2 no free current Region (3): b < < c; no free current, but r () = 3 + 4c b ; cb (1)

the material is non homogeneous. Region (4): c < < d; a conductor carrying current Io in the az direction; r = 4. Region (5): > d; free space = o Solve for H , m , M , Jb , Kb , Ibs , Ibv in all four regions and show that Ibs + Ibv = 0 for all cases.
