Dr. Elizabeth Mason, Director of the new department of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health. She was director of WHO's Department of Child and Adolescent Health and Development from September 2004, and from 1 August 2010 she was also responsible for the Department of Making Pregnancy Safer until the establishment of the new department. She leads a team of more than 100 professional staff at WHO headquarters, regional offices and in many countries. Dr. Elizabeth Mason is a specialist in Public Health - Maternal and Child Health, and spent 24 years living and working in the African region. For 13 years, she worked in Zimbabwe, initially at district level with the NGO OXFAM, then with the Ministry of Health at the Provincial Medical Directorate, and finally at Headquarters as deputy Director Maternal and Child Health. She subsequently worked for 11 years in Africa with WHO, in the inter country office for Southern Africa, and then in the Regional Office, Harare, as Regional Adviser for Child and Adolescent Health. She qualified in Medicine from the University of Leeds, in the UK, and holds an MSc in Community Medicine from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She is also a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health, U.K.
