TITLE : THE CONDITIONS OF SEED GERMINATION

Aim : The determine the conditions for seed germination Problem statement : What conditions are needed for a seed to germinate? Hypothesis : A seed will germinate only if there is water, air and warmth. Variables : a) that is keep constant : the type of seed b) that is manipulated : the conditions for germination c) that responds : seed germination Materials : Seeds, Oil, cotton, boiled water, labeling paper Apparatus : test tubes, refrigerator, test tube rack Procedure :

1. Four test tubes labeled A, B, C and D were prepared with their contents as shown in the diagram, 2. Test tubes A, B, C and d were placed in the laboratory, and the test tube D was placed in the refrigerator. 3. The seeds were observed after two days. Observation : Test Tube A B C D Analysis : 1. State the absence of a substance or condition that results in the non-germination of the seeds in the following test tubes. (a) In the test tube B : The absence of water (b) In the test tube C : The absence of air (c) In the test tube D : The absence of warmth 2. What are the conditions required for germination? Water, air and warmth 3. In which test tube is the control experiment? Water X Presence of Air Warmth X X Germination of seed germinates No germination No germination No germination

Test Tube A 4. Why was oil used in the test tube C? To prevent air from dissolving in the cooled boiled water. 5. What is not found in cooled boiled water? Air 6. (a) predict if seeds will germinate in the dark Yes, seed will germinate 7. (b) explain your answer. Seeds do not require light to germinate

Conclusion : 1. Hypothesis is accepted. 2. Air, water and suitable temperature are needed for the germination of seed.
