Coursework 1 Submission The submission date is Sunday 16th December 2012. The individual submission should be made through email at shervinunmc@gmail.com ONLY a single DOCX / DOC file. The subject of the email must comply with following pattern, Your name + C1. A Coursework Submission Sheet must be attached to the front as the cover letter. The submitted file will be checked by plagiarism software. Normal penalties for late work and plagiarism will be applied. Question 1) A bypass around the center of a congested town is to be designed and built. (a) By using the equations, calculate the design traffic in million standard axle (msa) based on the following predicted traffic volume, design life, growth factor and opening date: AADF: 1000 commercial vehicles Design life (n): assume your age as design life (i.e.: 18 years if you are born in 1994) AADF annual growth rate (r): 3.0 % Bypass open to traffic in 2020 (b) Using subgrade CBR of 9 %, determine the thickness of the subbase layer for the bypass. (c) Using the dense bitumen macadam with 50 penetration bitumen (DBM50) asphalt base material, determine the thickness of the base (structural) layer of the flexible pavement. The flexible construction will have a surfacing layer of 45mm thick and a binder course layer (between surfacing and base layer) of 60 mm thick. 2) The design traffic flow on the proposed tow-lane rural interstate highway in rolling terrain, which consists of 40 % commercial vehicle. As a highway engineer appointed by Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR), you are required to design a suitable flexible pavement structure using JKR design manual. Design details: Width of carriageway Width of shoulder Average Daily Traffic (ADT) Annual growth rate Subgrade California Bearing Ratio (CBR) Design period Required material for: Wearing and binder course Base course Subbase course = 7.50 m = 1.00 m = 4500 =3 % =7 % = 20 years

= Asphalt concrete = Cement stabilized = Crushed aggregate

According to the information given above, show your design calculations and relevant check.
