Redox Reaction

Red = Reduction
Ox = Oxidation

reaction whereas oxidation and reduction take place at one time (simultaneously)

First Definition : Redox Gain / loss of oxygen

Oxidation: Gain oxygen // loss hydrogen + O2 // - H2
Reduction : Loss oxygen // gain hydrogen - O2 // + H2

2nd Definition : Redox Transfer of Electrons

OIL RIG OIL = Oxidation Is Losing e RIG = Reduction Is Getting e Oxidation : A process to release electrons Reduction : A prosess to receive electrons

3rd definition : Redox The changes of oxidation number

oxidation : Increase of O.N

(eg. 0 to +1, -2 to 0, +2 to +3)

0 +1 +3 +2

Reduction : Decrease of O.N

(eg. 0 to -1, 0 to -1, +2 to 0) going down the stair..

-1 -2 -3

Oxidation number / oxidation states : charge of the atom of the element when the atom complete transfer of electrons

Oxidation Number (O.N)

charge on the ions to be written inversely zero, + or (have to be written in front) All element has their O.N

Metals = atom, O.N =0 Zn, Cu, Mg, Pb, Al, Ag Non-metals = molecule, O.N=0 Cl2 , Br2 , I2 , H2 , O2 , N2

Oxidation number
O in compound. = - 2 (except H2O2) H in compound. = +1 (except hydride, MgH2, NaH)

Cl, Br, I in compound. = - 1 (except ClO , ClO3 )

Oxidation number

U have to assume : every element in compound, be it covalent or ionic have charges

MgCl2 NP PbI2 NP ZnCO3 NP AgBr NP

Mg2+ Cl +2 -1 Pb2+ +2 I-1

Al2O3
NP CuO NP

Al3+ +3 Cu2+ +2

O2-2 O2-2

Zn2+ CO32+2 -2 Ag+ +1 Br-1

Redox reaction
