Book Talk
By: Shari Wickline 4/12 Author of the Month is : Nana Upstairs & Nana Downstairs The book Nana Upstairs & Nana Downstairs is a book that so many could read and relate with. The story is about a boys experience when visiting his grandparents home every Sunday. His greatgrandmother is Nana Upstairs who is bed ridden and needs the care of his grandmother Nana Downstairs. The story saddens when he is faced with the death of Nana Upstairs. Over time as he gets older Nana Downstairs becomes frail like his once great-grandmother and he recalls his memories of her becoming Nana Upstairs. The end of the story is him all grown up and facing the sadness of death once again, that of his grandmother (Nana Downstairs). Tom

Tomie dePaola

Tomie de Paola is an author and illustrator of childrens books. He was born on September 15, 1934 in Meriden, Connecticut. He spent his years in the company of his mother, father, brother and two sisters. Throughout his youth he drew, wrote, tap danced and sang. He enjoyed performing during his teen years and wanted to create a career out of his passions. Two of books he wrote and illustrated are:

The book Tom by Tomie dePaola was such a cute and fun story of childhood memories. Tommy a little boy who enjoys the company of his grandfather, whom he was named after, takes the reader on the adventures he shared with him. The book allows the reader to recall memories with their grandfather or significant role model in their lives. Tommy shows how easily children are fooled by those they admire and quite often gets into some pickles, after listening to his grandfather. The incident with the chicken feet is comical. It will have students laughing and I am sure wondering if it would really work.

Check-it-Out, check out some great online resources that can be used in the
classroom or at home. The resources have been reviewed and are recommended by your very own Sunnytown School Librarian. Included with each recommendation is a summary of the site/resource, how it can be utilized and a link so you can

Check-it-Out for yourself.

Story Place Story Place offers free and minimum fee based childrens books to download. The books are colorful and give the reader the option to read-along or read on their own the text. The stories were cute and can be retrieved on various devices to allow students access whenever and where ever. / I think this resource would be a fun and engaging way to get reluctant readers to read. I would use this resource as a listening station with emerging readers so they can listen to the story as the read-a-lot. MeeGenius - MeeGeius offers a variety of free ebooks for children. The students would have the option of reading the book as a read-a-long or on their own. The read along feature is very nice and the reader can be nicely understood and easily followed. The illustrations of the books are colorful and fun which will really engage the students. The books do not require time to download so using them on a smart board or in a computer center during individual center work would be a snap. There are also apps that can be downloaded onto iPhones & iPads, Androids and Google TV, so students can have even more access to the books.
