Victorian Era 18371901 In order of events ...... The period of Queen Victoria's reign from June 1837 until her death on the 22nd of January 1901 The reign was a long period of prosperity for the British people. Profits gained from the overseas British Empire, as well as from industrial improvements at home, allowed an educated middle class to develop. The era had a long period of peace, known as the Pax Britannica, and economic, colonial, and industrial consolidation. The Crimean War The policies of New Imperialism led to increasing colonial conflicts and eventually the Anglo-Zanzibar War and the Boer War. The unsolved problems relating to Irish Home Rule played a great part in politics in the later Victorian era The Easter Rising of 1916 and the subsequent domino effect that would play a large part in the fall of the empire.

As for Charles Dickens (7 February 18129 June 1870), he was NOT a "most important event" of the Victoria Era but he was the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era. In 1833, Dickens' first story, A Dinner at Poplar Walk was published in the London periodical, Monthly Magazine. This led to the serialisation of his first novel, The Pickwick Papers, in March 1836. He continued to contribute to and edit journals throughout his literary career. Producing Oliver Twist (183739), Nicholas Nickleby (183839), The Old Curiosity Shop Barnaby Rudge: A Tale of the Riots of 'Eighty as part of the Master Humphrey's Clock series (1840 41)all published in monthly instalments before being made into books.
