DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME

The choice of the Topic Explanations

I. Why we chose this news event

Choosing this topic Daylight saving time (DST) is that because time is an indispensable element of our daily life. Without it, we would not be able to live normally. By adjusting forward one hour about the start of spring and backward in autumn, this practice (DST) allows evenings have more daylight and mornings have less in the summer. To most of our audience (the class), this time shifting practice is fresh and interesting. Because most of us come from China, in which DST is not observed. Although, DST is observed in most of the western countries, the dispute over benefits and drawbacks of DST is always diametrically opposed to each other. Through this presentation, we are going to introduce the definition, talk a little bit background knowledge, state the pros and cons, and hold a quick vote about supporting or opposing the DST.

II. Why we think our audience would be interested in this topic

Subjectively, we are going to involve our audience by holding a quick vote after our presenting the information of DST. To achieve this purpose, we are planning a smart and clear structure of our presentation in order to deliver

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME everything efficiently. Also, we will use whatever we learnt from the lectures to catch our audience as tight as possible. Objectively, the summer time (DST) is always complained by our audience (the students) on advancing clocks side; however, on autumns backward adjusting side, DST turns to be a hurray on one hour more for sleeping in the morning. Therefore, we think our audience would focus on what we present.

III. What we think our audience knows about this topic

Depends on our background, we think most of us might know little about DST. Some of us might hear about it, but be hard to explain it clearly. Our goal is to make our audience know well about DST and show a little bit personal opinions on the issue of whether we should do it.

About the Topic (DST) Brief and Arguments

I. Brief
Definition - Daylight saving time (DST)also summer time in several countries in British English, and European official terminology is the practice of advancing clocks so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less. Typically clocks are adjusted forward one hour near the start of spring and are adjusted backward in autumn. History - Modern DST was first proposed by the New Zealand entomologist George Vernon Hudson in 1895, whose shift-work job gave him leisure time to collect insects, and led him to value after-hours daylight. Current Situation - Although not used by most of the world's countries, daylight saving time is common in the Western world.

II. Argument (Analysis)

Pros of DST Saving energy Promoting outdoor leisure activity in the evening Being good for physical and psychological health Reducing traffic accidents Reducing crime Being good for retail business Cons of DST Insomnia Heart attack increased Higher risk of traffic accidents Negative impact on market Environment Cost money

III. Our presentation strategy *

By debating the pros and cons of DST, we try to educate our audience about the DST and lead them to build their own understanding and opinions on if we should do DST every year. Also, we try to map a process of learning about DST by offering an output activity a vote on supporting or opposing DST at the end of our presentation, so that we can involve our audience interactively and exam the effect of our delivery immediately rather than one-way transferring the information.

Daylight saving time (DST)also summer time in several countries in British English, and European official terminology is the practice of advancing clocks so that evenings have 1 more daylight and mornings have less. Typically clocks are adjusted forward one hour near the start of spring and are adjusted backward in autumn. 2 DST is not used by most of the world's countries, but it is common in the Western world. Proponents of DST generally argue that it saves energy, promotes outdoor leisure activity in the evening, and is therefore good for physical and psychological health, reduces traffic 3 accidents, reduces crime, or is good for business. Groups that tend to support DST are urban workers or professionals, retail businesses, outdoor sports enthusiasts and businesses, tourism operators, and others who benefit from increased light during the evening. Opponents argue that actual energy savings are inconclusive, that DST can disrupt morning activities, and that the act of changing clocks twice a year is economically and socially 4 disruptive and cancels out any benefit. Groups that have tended to oppose DST are farmers, transportation companies, and the indoor and outdoor entertainment business. 5 We are looking forward the answer!
