INTE6RATIVE MODEL

Is about...

Integrative model is a type of instructional strategy used to help students develop a deep understanding of organized bodies of knowledge. Teachers guide students' efforts as they search for patterns and cause & effect relationships in,-the information being taught. This model helps students to construct their own personal understanding of the topics rather than being "spoon-fed" by the teacher.

THEORITICAL FOUNDATION

Based on the work of Hilda Taba...l965-67, which concluded that knowledge construction is organized in memory in the form of a schema L^ It suggests that motivation is inside the person and that as educators we contribute to. but cannot directly cause. student learning or change in learning outcomes
Teacher/student centered/."
Identify Topics=Teachers should choose a topic that involves an organized body of knowledge. Topics may come from standards, textbooks, curriculum guides, the interests of students and/or teachers, etc. -Specify Learning 6oals=What do you want your students to understand about the topic? Plan for critical thinking by guiding the students to form patterns, explanations, and develop hypotheses based on the evidence * -Prepare bota=Prepare the information that students can analyze to meet your learning goaL.this is usually organized in a matrix (one which compares & contrasts) -Specify Questions=Teachers should plan these questions in advance because it allows the lesson to flow smoother already knowing the types of questions that will be asked of the students. Be sure to note the amount of time that will be needed to cover the lesson.

PLANNING

IMPLEMENTING

-Open-ended phose=Teacher gets students familiar with analyzing information by asking them to describe, compare, and search for patterns in the data. -Casual phase^Students explain similarities and differences using data in chart to justify conclusions (hypotheses)...Usually begins with " Why?" -Hypothetical phase=Students think more deeply about how to apply the new information to new situations...Usually begins with " What would we expect to see..?' or " What
mould happen if...?"

-Closure and application=Students generalize to form broad relationships which summarizes the content ...The generalizations that students from here are known as the Big Ideas" that teachers hope they will carry away with them from the lesson; it helps students to apply their understandings to new situations (outcomes).

-ASSESSING

-MOTIVATION -MODIFICATION

Teachers can assess the students by asking them to make and access conclusions about information from matrices that they've already studied. Teachers can also asses the students by distributing quizzes which instructs them to apply generalizations to new information. Provide feedback. Students are motivated by student A group involvement,- Individual challenge, success, and perceptions of increased competence Teachers can modify the concept for younger kids by adding more visual information than verbal information when he/she discuss the matrices. When working with diverse students, the teacher can 1) gather most of the information that needs to,be included in the matrix and 2) Be more specific and structured during whole class discussions.

So what? What is important to understand about this?

v'

The Integrative model helps students develop deep understanding of the topics they study whrle they develop their critical thinking abilities. It helps Students comprehend organized bodies of knowledge by combining concepts, facts, generalizations, and the connections between all of them.
