* Showcase Lesson

Amanda Young Whole Class- Before the making of the phases with the Oreos, the students worked in groups to see if they could figure out the order of the moon phases with cards that I provided. They all did very well, considering that they did not know the order before hand. Only one group of students actually got them in the right order and that group consisted of Mason, Kyra, Rodri, Jose, and Lovie. The other groups maybe mixed up a few, but they all did very well for the first time! On the following day after the lesson the students were told to draw these phases in their science notebooks. As you can see from the table above, the students achievement varies. The most trouble that the students had with this assignment, was either the order and getting a couple switched around, or leaving out a few of the phases. Some of them did not draw any of them or only one or two. Individuals: High Student- Claire is the student I chose to use for my high student for this lesson. She is a very sweet little girl and always gets her work done. Claire cannot have chocolate and at the time I did not think about getting her the golden Oreos. She was just going to look on with a neighbor during the activity. When I came around to her table to tell her that she could draw these phases in the circles since she did not have Oreos, she was already doing that. She had gotten all seven of the eight phases correct, she had the full moon colored in when it should have been left white. For the after assessment, where the students had to draw the eight phases in their notebooks, Claire got six of the eight phases correct. She left out one of the wanning gibbous phases and had the other one switched around. This is a typical mistake that a lot of the students made during this lesson. Medium Student- Mason is a good student but sometimes you have to tell him over and over to do something before he does it. He was chosen as my medium student for this lesson. Mason was in the group at the beginning of the lesson that got all eight of the phases in the correct order. Group work is very important and helps students learn how to work as a team. I think it is easier for some students to understand things while working in a group than alone. This must be true with Mason. He did just fine like the rest of the class when creating the phases with the Oreos, but when it came to the final assessment, Mason only got four of the eight phases correct. First of all he did not put them in any order like he was told, he just drew the phases randomly on his paper. He did not draw the full moon, the wanning gibbous moons, or the final wanning crescent phase. He drew eight phases but they were not all correct. Low Student- My low student for the lesson is Armani. Armani is a sweet girl, but she has a hard time with assignments. She worked great with her group at the beginning of the lesson, but when it came to individual work, she had a little more trouble. When the students were supposed to be making phases with the Oreos, she had to be reminded of what to do several times. She got the assignment

Amanda Young done and she did it well, she just had to have a little help. When she did the final assessment, she only got one of the eight phases correct. She only drew two circles and the only phase she completed was the first quarter, or half moon, phase.
