Core Standard(s) 1 G4.0.1: Use components of culture (e.g., foods, language, religion, traditions) to describe diversity in family life. 1 P4.2.2: Participate in projects to help or inform others. Teacher Preparation Connection to prior knowledge Begin lesson by asking students questions about the communities article from Time Magazine. How do you definite a community: size, location, people, etc. Ask questions connecting Time article to the Communities story from reading books. *See anticipatory set for more details Goals/Rational To develop an understanding of the global community and students involvement with it and connection to it. Objective After reading and discussing Communities and an article from Time for Kids, students will trace their hands in the picture space on their Writers Workshop paper. On the lines below students will write three sentences: My name is ___, I am in first grade, and my favorite food is ___. When completed, students may color their handprints and draw pictures in the surrounding white space. Grouping Structures Anticipatory Set students will be seated at the carpet and the teacher will instruct the class as a whole Worksheets students will complete the drawings and sentences individually at their desks Reflection transition students to the carpet Lesson Materials / Equipment Globe Sponsor Letter Sponsor handprint Writers Workshop paper (1 per student) Glue sticks Scissors Pencils

Instructional Procedures Introduction / Anticipatory Set 10 minutes 1. Prepare students for lesson ask students to clear their desks, push in their chairs, and walk quietly to the carpet 2. Ask students what they remember from the Time article a. What did the article talk about? b. What communities did the article talk about? c. List their own communities d. What were the children doing in the article? helping others 3. Discuss characteristics of a community a. Size b. Location c. People d. What makes one community similar to / different from another communities i. Language ii. Food iii. Jobs tie in Communities story iv. Clothing 4. Discuss global community a. Use globe to show different countries ask students what other countries they can think of or have been to b. Tie in Ecuador and sponsor letter describe what child sponsorship is c. Discuss language: letter originally in Spanish but translated to English d. Read letter and discuss similarities and differences: jobs, interests, school, etc 5. Make connection: a. Ask if any family members have ever done a service or mission trip abroad b. Make connection to students: just like the kids in the Time article were helping their community, we can help our global community through things like child sponsorship and writing letters Activity 20 minutes 1. Explain letter writing a. Hand print in the top box of the Writers Workshop page b. Write three sentences on the lines below: i. My name is _____. ii. I am in first grade. iii. My favorite food is _____. iv. *Sentences can be written on the board for clarification c. Explain that space must be left on the bottom another part of the activity
