Student Procedures Upon arrival: If the student arrives before 7:10 am they are to sit in the red cafeteria until 7:10. Between 7:10- 7:30 students are allowed to be in the halls, and take care of personal matters. If the student arrives to school after 7:30 they are to check in at the attendance office with a note from the parent or guardian explaining the reason for tardiness. Tardies: If a student is late to class they are to report to the tardy captain at the attendance office and get a minor referral. Tardies that exceed 10 minutes after the late bell will be considered skipping. Passes: If a student needs to leave the classroom at any time for any reason students are to use their personal hall pass given out at the beginning of each grading period. If a student loses their pass it will not be replaced and they student will not be allowed to leave the classroom. Early Release: The student must bring in a note and turn it in to their first period teacher from a parent or guardian with a telephone number, time of dismissal, reason, and method by which the student is leaving. Student must sign out at the attendance office. If a student does not leave at assigned time trespassing charges could be applied. Medical concerns: If a student is sick or injured they must go to the clinic with a pass. The nurse will then decide if a parent needs to be called in order for the student to go home. It is important that all students communicate long-term medical concerns with the nurse to assure the safest environment for the student. If medication is required the Parent/ Guardian must drop of the medication with instructions to the nurse. Students may carry one day worth of medication on their person with the nurses permission. Further guidelines can be found in the code of conduct. Phone calls: Phone calls are limited to emergencies only and can be made in the main office upon the discretion of the secretaries. The student must have a pass to the office from their classroom teacher. Bus passes: The student must bring in a note from a parent or guardian and turn it in to their first period teacher. The note must contain student name, date, parent phone number, and bus number the student will be riding. After school activities: Students may stay after school to participate in an afterschool activity such as a sports, tutoring, and clubs. Students must be in their designated place by 2:45 p.m. and must be under direct supervision of a staff member at all times. Students are required to follow school rules and are subject to disciplinary measures. Students are required to get an activity bus pass from the coach, sponsor, or teacher in order to ride the activity bus home. After a student is caught two times loitering after school unsupervised, all afterschool activity privileges will be revoked. Make up work: After a student is absent, they need to bring a note from a parent/ guardian within three days giving the reason for absence, a phone number, and signature. This note is to be turned into their first block teacher. It is the attendance secretarys discretion based on the guidelines in the code of conduct if the absence is excused or unexcused. The student then needs to communicate with his/her classroom teachers to set up time to make up missed work. If the absence is unexcused, the teacher is not required to give make up work.

STUDENT FEES
Senior class fees are $25.00 Junior class fees are $15.00 Sophomore class fees are $10.00 Freshman class fees are $5.00 $5.00 fee for hall lockers (sharing lockers is not recommended and lockers remain the property of the school) Teachers will inform the students as to the fees for classes. Fees should be paid in a timely manner. It is the policy of the School Board to charge students fees and to recover funds for the loss of or damage to School Board property in accordance with the Code of Virginia

PARKING PRIVILEGES
Driving to school is a privilege reserved for students with a: Valid Virginia Drivers license Valid Virginia Registration Vehicle which is owned by student or students parent/guardian Permission from parent Failure to display parking permit appropriately in the car, 6 tardies to school, or leaving school without permission may result in suspension, revocation of parking privileges, or towing of vehicle.

TEXTBOOKS
Basic textbooks will be issued free to all students. The purchase of all other classroom materials (pens, pencils, and other classroom supplies required by the teacher) will be the responsibility of the students. If books are lost or damaged in excess of reasonable wear, the student will be assessed a fee to cover replacement costs that must be paid to the bookkeeper before the end of each year.

CLINIC
Any student needing to take prescription medicine during the school day should make arrangements with the nurse. (Refer to the Code of Conduct - Administering Medicine to Students- for additional information.) If you have any special medical needs, please inform the nurse. All students need the hall pass from a teacher before coming to the clinic for a less than urgent reason.

ABSENCES/ ATTENDANCE Attendance Requirements: Be present for 75 days for a semester course (allow 8 absences). Excused/Unexcused: If absent you must bring a note to the attendance office. The absence can be excused or unexcused which will be determined by the attendance secretary. o Absence Unexcused: Makeup work will not be accepted for credit. o Absence Excused: Makeup work will be accepted for credit with a valid note. See Student Code of Conduct for attendance policy requirements. EARLY RELEASE To apply for early release students must have: subject-related, on-the-job work experience or hardship situations a valid VA drivers license vehicle have met the required verified credits for graduation Upon approval, each student is issued an early dismissal pass. Students must carry dismissal pass for identification purposes and must leave school grounds promptly at the designated time. Failure to comply will result in disciplinary action and/or forfeiture of early dismissal through schedule changes. EARLY DISMISSAL A student who must leave school early must bring a note from his/her parent/legal guardian to the attendance office or to the first period teacher . Phone calls, emails, and/or faxes will not be accepted. The note must have a telephone number for verification, the time the student needs to leave school, and the method by which the student will be leaving. A student must remain in class until he/she is called to the office to leave, and he/she must sign out in the front office before leaving school. A student will not be allowed to have early dismissal during testing.

BUILDING HOURS Class is in session between 7:30 a.m. and 2:35 p.m. The building will be open to students at 7:10 a.m. and will remain open until 5:00 p.m. for those students involved in supervised activities. Students that arrive before 7:10 are to report to the red cafeteria. Students staying after 2:45 p.m. must be under the direct supervision of a staff member at all times. Students not participating in supervised activities must leave school grounds. Any student not in compliance will face disciplinary action, including being prohibited from attending extra-curricular activities and events. CLOSING OF SCHOOL DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER School cancellations due to inclement weather will broadcast between 5:00 and 7:00 a.m. on radio stations WFVA (101.5 FM, 1230 AM), WFLS (93.3 FM, 1350 AM, Channel 6 - WTVR, and Channel 12 - WWBT. All parents and students are asked not to call the school or Central Office regarding school closings. Parents and students may sign up for Caroline Alert through the school website. Once enrolled, you will receive text and/or email regarding school closings and emergency information.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS The Caroline County School Division is governed by the Code of Student Conduct, which is distributed to every student. In order to maintain a school climate conducive to academic excellence, each Caroline student is responsible for his/her actions. Staff and faculty members authority extends to ALL students, whether he or she teaches the student in class or not. Show respect, cooperation and courtesy; refrain from any inappropriate behavior and disruptive actions (ex. walking away from or talking back to faculty or staff, refusing to properly identify oneself, displaying rude behavior, challenging authority, use of profanity, obscenity, and/ or demeaning remarks). Dress in a accordance with the dress code set up by the school. Conduct oneself in a safe and orderly manner. Respect the rights of others during both curricular and extra-curricular activities. Carry out all requests made by all faculty, staff, and personnel of the school. Follow all rules set up by each teacher in each classroom. Be on time and have necessary class materials. Cheating and plagiarizing on any assigned schoolwork is prohibited. The use or possession of any controlled substance, alcohol, and/ or tobacco product is prohibited

For a full list of expectations please refer to the Caroline County Code of Conduct. All students are expected to follow all rules set forth by the school and school division. Failure to comply with these expectations will result in disciplinary action.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES Cell phones, CD players, iPODS, other music devices, laptops, electronic games and other electronic devices must be turned off and out of sight at all times during the school day. Laser pointers are not allowed in school for any reason. Students who do not comply will have these items confiscated and returned only to a parent or guardian. The school is not responsible for any lost or stolen items. 9

ATHLETICS
Failure to adhere to these expectations will result in immediate removal from the event without refund and/or banishment from future school events.
Spectators must NOT go onto the field/court at any time. Walkways and steps must be clear at all times. Any attendee exhibiting aggressive or physical behavior is subject to immediate removal without refund. Students will also be subject to additional disciplinary action. A person exhibiting disruptive behavior can result in the removal from the athletic event. The following actions are considered disruptive behavior. 1) Random and excessive movement in groups during the athletic event. 2) Loitering or standing around the concession areas unless in line to make a purchase. 3) Using profanity, inappropriate language, or threatening comments. All arrangements for transportation to and from the game must be made in advance.

SPORTS ELIGIBILITY
Prospective student-athletes shall have earned five (5) credits with a passing grade for the previous school year to participate in sports, and they must be currently taking three (3) credits. A 2.0 GPA is required for participation beginning with the class of 2015.

GRADE LEVEL CLASSIFICATION


Class placement shall be as follows: 9th Grade (Freshman) 0 Credits Must have passed or have met the middle school requirements. 10th Grade (Sophomore) Must have passed five classes 11th Grade (Junior) Must have passed eleven classes 5 Credits 11 Credits

12th Grade (Senior) 15 Credits Must be able to meet all graduation requirements by June. This is at the principal's discretion. GRADING SCALE Report cards are issued four times a year. Students must meet credit and course requirements to graduate. To participate in the graduation ceremony, students must meet all graduation criteria. DRESS CODE Clothing that displays or advertises alcoholic beverages or other items prohibited on school property, sexually explicit references, items which convey derogatory messages regarding race, sex, color, national origin, religion, disability, or sexual orientation, any item displaying profane or suggestive words, messages or pictures, or gang related messages is prohibited. Hats, caps, scarves, bandanas, hair picks, do-rags, weave caps, large combs, brushes, sunglasses and rollers or other headgear of any kind will not be permitted unless it is in keeping with an organized religion. Open Midriff clothing, halter, tank, or off the shoulder blouses or dresses, clothing that expose undergarments are prohibited. Straps must be 3 inches in width. Plunging necklines below armpit level are prohibited. Shorts or dresses more than three inches above the knee are prohibited Jerseys without a shirt underneath are prohibited. Pants must be worn securely around the hips. Pajamas, sleepwear, swimwear and beachwear are prohibited. No chains may be worn. Clothing or accessories that have sharp items such as spikes or bolts protruding from them are prohibited. School issued athletic uniforms may be worn on game days only in such a way that is in keeping with the school dress code

TARDY POLICY

Students are required to be in class when the bell rings. If a student is tardy, they will report to the tardy station at the attendance office and be given a minor referral. Tardies will reset at semester break. The following consequences are for being tardy: Each tardy will result in a minor referral For every 3 minors to any class a major referral will be filled out and processed following the discipline rubric.

A student, who reports to school after 7:30 a.m., must report to the attendance office to sign in. Excessive tardies to school will result in disciplinary action, including suspension/revocation of driving privileges, as well as intervention by the courts. 12

MAJOR VS MINOR OFFENSES


The offenses are broken down into major vs. minor offenses. Minor offenses will be handled by the Administrative Assistants. Major offenses will be handled directly by the administrators. An accumulation of three minor offenses will result in a major offense referral.

Passes out of class are restricted to emergencies. Any student in the halls while classes are in session must have the standardized pass issued to the student from the teacher responsible for him/her at that time. If a student does not have their privilege pass they will not be allowed to leave the room except for a medical emergency. CAFETERIA INFORMATION/VENDING MACHINES Breakfast is served daily in the cafeteria from 7:10 to 7:25 a.m. Lunch is served during the students designated lunch time. Soft drink and snack vending machines in the hallways are available for all students before 7:25 a.m. and after 2:35 p.m. Vending Machines inside the cafeteria are to be used during breakfast or lunch. Glass containers are prohibited on school grounds at any time. Only water in a clear container will be allowed in the classrooms and hallways at any time. All food is to be consumed in the cafeteria. Food is not allowed in the hallways or classrooms. Students are allowed to have water in clear containers in the classroom and hallways. 13
