Background Information Reading 5th grade Individual 20 minutes Comprehension Goals and Rationale To model and explain strategies for student to better understand the text. Student will need to use comprehension to understand the text as a whole.

C. Teacher Objectives/ Standards and Benchmarks I want this student to understand and connect with the text rather than just reading. Comprehension is needed in order to understand the conflicts and resolutions of the story. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.5.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text,
including figurative language such as metaphors and similes.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.5.1 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.5.6 Describe how a narrators or speakers point of view influences how events are described.

Teacher Preparation I will need to pre-read the chapter that the whole class will be reading The student will need chapter 6 from City of Ember Student will need sticky notes. I need to identify the students understanding of previous chapters.

E. Assessment Plans To have the student recognize text to self. I will assess the students comprehension by giving 7 comprehension questions from the chapter read independently.

I will know if my student reached my objective if my student answers my comprehension questions with a 75% mastery rating.
