Ancient Egyptian Word List Where did these civilizations settle? The Egyptians settled along the Nile River in the northeast corner of Africa. They were there from about 3100 BCE to 350 CE. The Kushites settled south of the Egyptians and the southern part of the Nile. They were there from about 2000 BCE to 350 CE. The Hebrews settled northeast of Egypt, in Canaan from about 1800 BCE to 70 CE. Diet: The pyramid builders were each given 2 GALLONS OF BEER a day after they worked. Recreation: Games and toys were important for both living and the dead. The toys were buried with the dead so they could be entertained with them in the after life. Clothing: Both men and woman wore sandals made out of papyrus. Wealthy citizens dyed their clothes bright colors because that was their fashion.

Housing: I learned that most Egyptian housing is made out of sundried mud of the Nile River. It is often made with pebbles and straw. Beauty: I learned that men and woman wore make up and perfume. Wigs were made out of human hair worn by the pharaohs. Language: In Greek, hieroglyphs means sacred carving. There are over 700 different hieroglyphs in the Egyptian writing system. The oldest hieroglyphs date back over 6000 years. Music: Egyptian cities would regularly host public festivals where people could dance and play music. Dancers were typically female. They would attempt cartwheels, backbends, and handstands while using clappers. Pharaohs: A beard means an iconic symbol of power. Most powerful deities like Osiris wore beards. Burial: Pharaoh Khufu of the Old Kingdom the body believed to have a cedar sarcophagus before it was placed in the Great Pyramid. The same Pharaoh also made his workers build two massive boats (150 feet long out of cedar.) Afterlife: Death rituals and preparation for the after life was so elaborate. Egyptologists know more about how they died than they were alive. Tombs: The worst crime you could commit in Egypt was tomb robbery. Pharaohs stopped building massive pyramids and kept their final resting place secret.
