LESSON THREE: Linking different Artists Year Level: AusVELS: Level 5/6.

Domain: Dimension: The Arts Exploring and Responding

Standards:

At Level 6, students discuss traditional and contemporary arts works using appropriate arts language to describe the content, structure and expressive qualities of their own and other peoples works from a range of arts disciplines and forms. They interpret and compare key features of arts works made in a range of times, places and cultures. They identify and describe influences on their own works and discuss the purposes for which arts works are created in different historical and cultural contexts.

Learning Focus: The students will deepen their understanding of what sculpture is, by comparing and contrasting two different sculpture artists, before collecting/collating materials for their upcoming projects. *A second staff member may be necessary for supervision in this lesson, as it requires the students to collect materials from the school grounds. INTRODUCTION: Show the students the slideshow Andy Goldsworthy Pool, focusing on the different mediums he uses when creating his artworks. http://www.flickr.com//groups/andygoldsworthy/pool/show/ (There are quite a number of photos, so I recommend only playing slideshow for a minute or two) Show collage image of Andy Goldsworthys works, focusing on the mediums he uses, what he is representing. http://denverlibrary.org/files/andy_goldsworthy.jpg Explain the value of Ephemeral Art as depicted by Andy Goldsworthy. LESSON CONTENT: Linking the two artists together, Henry Moore and Andy Goldsworthy who both draw their inspiration from nature the students will complete the CC Chart on the two sculpture artists. Having drawn their own inspiration from the Andy Goldsworthy slide show, the students will make a plan for an Andy Goldsworthy ephemeral sculpture of their own, using natural materials that they can collect around the school and bring materials from the gardens at home (for the next lesson) * the students artwork will not be ephemeral in the same way as Goldsworthy, as leaving them around the school grounds to slowly disintegrate poses a safety hazard for other students on the playground. The students (under supervision and depending on class sizes, with a second staff member) spend 15 minutes in the school ground collecting their natural materials to make the Andy Goldsworthy sculptures they have designed.

ASSESSMENT The CC chart can form part of the assessment for this lesson. thoughtful evaluation of the two sculpture artists connecting evidence linking their mediums to the art form of sculpture
